The differences between males and females are evident when it comes to basic anatomy and the way we process emotions. However, there are differences between men and women’s hearts that need to be considered. In fact, more women die of heart disease annually than men, and there isn’t enough research and awareness to stop it. A new campaign called Fight The Lady Killer™ has formed to raise awareness about the number one killer of women: heart disease. To follow is everything a woman needs to know about what they can do to stop The Lady Killer once and for all.

Heart Disease is a Real Threat to Women

  • Heart disease kills more women than all cancer-related deaths combined
  • Heart disease affects women of all ages and races
  • Heart disease kills one in three women
  • A women dies every minute from heart disease

Are All Women at Risk for Heart Disease?

Fight The Lady Killer has started a hashtag (#getheartchecked) on social media to help raise awareness about the importance of early heart health screenings. It’s important for all people, but most critically women, get their hearts checked by their trusted health care provider. According the Fight The Lady Killer’s website, during a heart health screening your medical provider can calculate your 10-year and lifetime risk of developing heart disease. To follow are some things to discuss with your board-certified cardiologist so that you can make certain lifestyle adjustments to lower your risk of heart disease.

  • Medical history
  • Personal or family history of hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and diabetes
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Shortness of breath, chest pain or fatigue
  • History of smoking
  • Diet and exercise habits

Knowing your individual risk for heart disease can help encourage you to change your lifestyle to live a more heart healthy life. One of the best things you can do for your heart is to eat a well-balanced heart healthy diet and exercise regularly. If you smoke, quit today. For help quitting, talk to your physician.
